Help us locate remaining water vole populations!

As part of GiGL’s work with the London Water Vole Recovery Programme, we have created a short, online recording portal  for the submission of water vole and American mink records.

Water voles are one of the UK’s and London’s fastest declining mammal species due to habitat degeneration and predation from invasive American mink. Rapid declines have left a scarcity of data on the location and health of remaining populations in London. Records submitted through the portal will help to effectively target conservation actions and mink control interventions and will feed into the National Water Vole Monitoring Programme.

Submitting records through the portal should take no more than a few minutes. The portal’s accompanying identification guide will help users to confidently identify water voles and American mink. More detailed identification information is available through the Water Vole Recovery Programme Launch Event Video, which also includes a demonstration of using the portal. We encourage users to submit photographs of their observations to help us better verify records.

The London Water Vole Recovery Programme is a partnership between GiGL, Zoological Society of London, People’s Trust for Endangered Species and London Wildlife Trust. It is supported by the Mayor of London’s Rewild Fund II.
