Sutcliffe Park Flood Alleviation Scheme
Borough: Greenwich
Grade: Borough Grade II
Access: Free public access (all/most of site)
Area: 6.06 ha

Description

This Environment Agency flood alleviation scheme for the River Quaggy was completed in 2004. Prior to implementation, the river ran below ground in a concrete culvert. It has now been restored to a meandering channel, flowing within its natural flood plain with a mosaic of damp grassland and wetlands. The site also includes a lake, as well as several smaller permanent ponds and temporary wetlands. The scheme won the prestigious RSPBCIWEM Living Wetlands Award in 2007. Facilities include a boardwalk and pond-dipping platform, outdoor classroom, seats and interpretative signs.

Wildlife

The lake has extensive reed beds around its edges, and other vegetation at the water's edge includes purple-loosestrife and flowering rush. Kingfishers are regularly seen here.
