Ancient Mother Churchyard, Stoke Newington
Borough: Hackney
Grade: Local
Access: Free public access (all/most of site)
Area: 0.31 ha

Description

This is a fine example of an ancient churchyard. A relic of the former village of Stoke Newington, the churchyard of old St Mary’s Church has a deceptively rural character, and is popular with local artists.

Wildlife

Trees and shrubs include some fine mature London plane and common lime. These provide habitat for birds and invertebrates, including the holly blue butterfly. Glades support wildflowers such as cow parsley, bittersweet and enchanter's nightshade. There are good moss communities on the walls and tombstones.
