Accessible Sites of Importance for Nature Conservation

Archway Park
Borough: Islington
Grade: Local
Access: Free public access (all/most of site)
Area: 0.83 ha

Description

Situated close to Archway station and surrounded by housing estates, Archway Park is an important local resource for recreation and relaxation. The park is open at all times.

Wildlife

The park is interestingly contoured, taking full advantage of being on a slope. The broad belts of shrubs and young trees along the northern and western edges contain a good proportion of native species, including hawthorn, elder, field maple, guelder rose and almond willow. A bank at the northern end offers a fair range of wildflowers, including parsley-piert, a tiny, insignificant-looking member of the rose family. This is characteristic of dry, sandy grassland and is quite uncommon in London.
