Cocked Hat Plantation (Hurstleigh Gardens Open Space)
Borough: Redbridge
Grade: Local
Access: Free public access (all/most of site)
Area: 3.79 ha

Description

The eastern part of this open space is a remnant of a historically much larger area of ancient woodland. The vegetation is similar to that in Claybury Wood and Egg Clump, with which it was probably once contiguous.

Wildlife

A few large oaks are more or less the only relics of the old woodland, and now rise above a dense thicket of blackthorn and regenerating elm. Bluebell is found in the ground flora. The rest of the park is amenity grassland, with common wildflowers such as autumnal hawkbit and meadow buttercup.
