GiGL’s operational area covers the administrative area of Greater London, which is 1,572 km2. The Greater London Authority is responsible for the strategic local government in the region, which also covers 32 London Boroughs and the City of London. There are 35 local planning authorities in total – the 32 London Boroughs, City of London, the London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC) and Old Oak and Park Royal Development Corporation (OPDC).
There are also hundreds of local and regional groups and organisations who record and defend nature in the capital, from London Natural History Society and London Bat Group through to the 600+ friends of green spaces groups across the city.
We collaborate closely with colleagues in the local environmental records centres in the surrounding counties, focusing on business development, data sharing across boundaries and delivery of services to partners and clients we have in common. We are also active members of the Association of Local Environmental Records Centres (ALERC) and the National Biodiversity Network (NBN) which both operate at a UK-level.
The map below shows our operational boundary along with those of all other members of the network of local environmental records centres. Clicking on the map will display links to the relevant LERC’s website along with additional information on its membership of ALERC and accreditation status.
Turn on the boundaries in the map below to see the extents of GiGL’s region.
You can zoom to or search for a place in the map to see if your area of interest is within the GiGL region or that of a neighbouring local environmental records centre.
If your area of interest is outside of Greater London, click the records centre area to access their website, via ALERC.
