Buckthorne Cutting Nature Reserve, part of the Forest Hill to New Cross Gate Site of Importance for Nature Conservation, is a living remnant of the Great North Wood. The site became a protected nature reserve in 2017 when the Fourth Reserve Foundation was established to safeguard the site, and manage it for the benefit of volunteers, nature lovers and in particular local families.
