This formerly abandoned laundry yard in a Newham council estate has been transformed by the local community into The UP Garden as a place for gardening, playing and socialising to improve physical and mental health.
To address climate issues, a 160m2 wildflower urban meadow and two 20m long gravel drains were installed in the asphalt yard, whilst 14 water butts/tanks (almost all connected to a collective 230m2 of surface area) capture 7500L of otherwise wasted rain.
There is a strong focus on sustainability: the majority of furniture and materials were donated by local businesses then upcycled by community volunteers, whilst the micro-allotment scheme allows estate residents to grow edible plants.
The UP Garden hosts family workshops during term breaks, quarterly seasonal events showcasing local talent, is open every day, and entry is always free in order to be as inclusive as possible.
