This sycamore wood sits on the steep face of an old sand pit and is almost completely surrounded by housing developments. In 1982 the land was sold by the Regional Health Authority to the Blackheath Preservation Trust (BPT). The BPT is now part of the Blackheath Society, a registered charity. The Friends of Westcombe Woodlands was established to work in partnership with BPT to manage the site as a nature reserve. There is restricted access to the site, with regular volunteer and open days held throughout the year.
