Description

The cottage-style St Helier Estate was built between 1928 and 1936. At that time many of the mature trees from the pre-existing fields were retained and incorporated into the wide green verges of the roads, such as along Lilleshall Road where some fine mature oaks can be seen. Lilleshall Road passes across a green with areas of newer planting to the north and more established older woodland to the south. This is Moreton Green, which gives a sense of airiness and openness to the whole area as it slopes gently downhill towards the north. The much smaller northern part used to consist of just mown grass with a few immature oaks, but the council has planted trees and relaxed the mowing regime in the immediate surrounds. From the higher, southern parts of Moreton Green, there are views to the towers of Docklands. Moreton Green is well used by local residents, particularly dog walkers. There are a number of informal paths through the wooded part, as well as one formal one.

Wildlife

The highpoint of the southern area is a small site in the middle, of mature oak and ash that has been under-planted with other trees such as field maple, sycamore, ash and silver birch to develop woodland. Shrubs such as dog-rose, hazel and suckering elm form a shrub layer in places, and bramble is common everywhere. Woodland edge species are also found, such as ground-ivy, cleavers, stinging nettle and cow parsley. The wooded area provides good habitat for birds and invertebrates.
