Description

This site is surrounded completely by waterways, with the River Lee and Lee Navigation to the west and the Lee Flood Relief Channel to the east. It is also bounded by the Borough boundary in the west and Lockwood Reservoir in the south. Tottenham Marshes East, also known as Wild Marsh East, is made up of a large open area of grassland, edged with scrub and young trees, some of which have been planted. The Lea Valley Walk passes the western edge of Tottenham Marshes, along the Lee Navigation.

Wildlife

At the centre is a large expanse of neutral grassland with numerous colourful wildflowers, including yarrow, cow parsley, mugwort, common knapweed, teasel, hogweed, nettle and creeping cinquefoil. The young shrubs and trees planted on the perimeter form dense thickets including field maple, dogwood, hawthorn, ash, wild cherry, blackthorn, dog rose, crack willow and rowan. This area of scrub and young trees is excellent breeding habitat for small birds such as wren, robin, blackbird, blue tit and great tit. The site is also rich in insects, particularly grasshoppers and crickets.
