Accessible Sites of Importance for Nature Conservation

Coulsdon Court Wood and Betts Mead
Borough: Croydon
Grade: Borough Grade I
Access: Free public access (part of site)
Area: 108.65 ha

Description

This site is an area with a range of wildlife habitats, rising from the Caterham Valley to Kenley Aerodrome. The habitats are mixed woodland with a rich collection of woody species, together with meadows. To the south of Betts Mead recreational ground, there are extensive hay fields. The whole of the site is in the Green Belt. Part of it is managed by the Surrey Wildlife Trust as Dollypers Hill, and here grassland has been restored by removing scrub.

Wildlife

The site's trees range from beech and yew to quite extensive areas of wild cherry. The meadows to the south are dominated by Yorkshire fog and meadow grasses, with pepper-saxifrage scattered in damper places. The meadows are also good for butterflies; ringlet, speckled wood, skippers and green hairstreak have all been recorded.
