Upper Norwood Recreation Ground
Borough: Croydon
Grade: Local
Access: Free public access (all/most of site)
Area: 7.8 ha

Description

Upper Norwood Recreation Ground was acquired by the council in 1890 and opened the same year by the Mayor, who had come directly from opening the new Wandle Park. A local newspaper report said when Upper Norwood Recreation Ground opened, the landscape was rather sparse as it had only just been laid out and that one of the best things about it was the views from the site, including the towers of Crystal Palace. Upper Norwood Recreation Ground is on the Capital Ring.

Wildlife

The mature trees visible today include horse chestnut, beech, common lime, London plane, pedunculate and Turkey oaks, sugar maple and various cherries and apples. The trees attract a good range of common breeding birds, such as chaffinches. Among the amenity grasses there is a good variety of common wildflowers.
