Description

Made up of four adjacent sections, this site features extensive acid grassland and woodland. Adding to the range of habitats are ponds at the northern end of The Slade, a steep-sided valley with extensive gorse on the sides. Near Riverdale Road and Purrett Road, there are extensive views across the Thames Gateway. The Plumstead Common Environment Group takes an active role in enhancing the Common and associated areas. There is free public access to the common, which lies on the Green Chain Walk. Greenwich Primary Care Trust’s Feet First walks programme uses this site as part of a Walking the Way to Health (WHI) scheme.

Wildlife

The acid grasslands are dominated by common bent, red fescue and wavy hair-grass with typical wildflowers such as sheep's sorrel and cat's-ear. Scattered scrub of gorse occurs throughout. Woodland areas feature bluebell and wood sage. Areas of woodland are dominated by pedunculate oak and downy birch, with a varied shrub layer and ground flora including bluebell and wood sage. A small pond at the northern end of The Slade is fringed with poplars.
