Description

This site includes the western and eastern areas of the Woolwich Cemeteries, together with the small adjoining park of Rockcliffe Gardens. Habitats in the cemeteries are mainly grassland, although the eastern cemetery also has scrub and woodland.

Wildlife

Grassland in the western cemetery is quite rich, including wildflowers such as common knapweed, oxeye daisy and bird's-foot-trefoil. More acidic areas feature sheep's fescue, early hair-grass, small crane's-bill, sheep's sorrel and mouse-ear hawkweed. Black spleenwort, a scarce fern in London, grows on some of the gravestones. The eastern cemetery contains similar grassland. Woodland here is dominated by birch and ash. Rockliffe Gardens has dense shrubberies and a small pond, where celery-leaved buttercup grows.
