Brookmill Park includes an ornamental garden, a pond, and a nature reserve. The reserve is separated from the main body of the park by the River Ravensbourne, which flows between them. A large section of the river was broken out of the concrete channel it had been built into and given a more natural course offering much improved habitat for wildlife.Brookmill Park won a Green Flag Award again for 20089. Lewisham Health Walks project uses this site – a Walking the Way to Health (WHI) scheme; see link for details.

Description
Wildlife
The Ravensbourne provides a home for many aquatic plants and animals. Purple loosestrife and other water plants have been planted, whilst hemlock water-dropwort is probably self established. A number of waterfowl and other birds are often seen. These include coot, moorhen, mallard, grey wagtail, grey heron and kingfisher. Fish in this part of the river include eel, flounder, and stickleback. Dragonflies and damselflies such as blue-tailed damselfly and brown hawker also fly here.Beside the river and in the nature area on the northern bank various (largely native) trees and shrubs have planted. Species include hawthorn and various willows and osiers. These attract a variety of common birds including breeding blue tit, great tit, wren, greenfinch, song thrush and blackbird. There are very attractive ornamental gardens at the northern end of Brookmill Park. The large number of conifers here attracts goldcrests during the winter. The pond is used by waterfowl, including Canada geese. Numerous grasshoppers and a number of butterflies frequent the southern end of the park - the site of a former disused railway embankment. These include small white, meadow brown, small skipper and comma.Facilities
Playground; archaeological remains. The Green Deptford walk passes through the site.
