East London Cemetery
Borough: Newham
Grade: Borough Grade II
Access: Free public access (all/most of site)
Area: 16.24 ha

Description

This sizeable cemetery was opened in 1872 as a burial ground for the local population in East London. It is close to the Northern Outfall Sewer Embankment, now known as The Greenway.

Wildlife

The site has a good number of mature trees. Although most of the grass between the graves is kept short, there are less intensively managed areas of scrub and rough grassland on the perimeter. These habitats support a good range of breeding and migrant birds.
