Accessible Sites of Importance for Nature Conservation

West Ham Cemetery and West Ham Jewish Cemetery
Borough: Newham
Grade: Local
Access: Free public access (part of site)
Area: 12.21 ha

Description

West Ham Cemetery is a large site with plenty of mature trees. The adjacent Jewish Cemetery has few trees, and is of less nature conservation interest. There is free access to West Ham Cemetery but not to the Jewish Cemetery.

Wildlife

West Ham Cemetery has plenty of mature trees, mostly limes but also pedunculate and holm oaks, sycamore, ash and several types of conifer. These provide habitat for a good range of common birds. The grassland beneath the trees is kept tidy, but not over-manicured, allowing a fair diversity of wildflowers to grow. These include oxeye daisy, black medick, white campion and sheep's sorrel, the latter suggesting acid soils.
