Description

This large park and recreation ground form part of a substantial area of open space together with Nonsuch Park in Epsom & Ewell borough. Amenity grassland dominates the site but there are many fine specimen trees too, adding greatly to the landscape.

Wildlife

An area of grassland in the north-west of the park (and continuing through the recreation ground) has been allowed to grow long, increasing its nature conservation interest. Common bent (Agrostis capillaris) and red fescue (Festuca rubra) are widespread, and a variety of other species are present including self-heal (Prunella vulgaris), dove's-foot and cut-leaved crane's bills (Geranium molle and G. dissectum), perforate St John's wort (Hypericum perforatum), Yorkshire fog (Holcus lanatus), Timothy (Phleum pratense), meadow barley (Hordeum secalinum), strawberry clover (Trifolium fragiferum), red bartsia (Odontites verna) and goat's beard (Tragapogon pratense). The mature trees, hedges and scrub provide berries and good cover for birds, with jackdaw, stock dove, great spotted and green woodpeckers, kestrel, chiffchaff, coal tit, mistle thrush, nuthatch, blackcap, greenfinch and ring-necked parakeet all being recorded in the park. A wooded fringe of mostly sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus), ash (Fraxinus excelsior) and frequent regenerating elm (Ulmus sp.) on the south and west sides adds further variety to the site, as does a seasonal pond on the western boundary.
