Accessible Sites of Importance for Nature Conservation

St Patrick's Cemetery
Borough: Waltham Forest
Grade: Local
Access: Free public access (all/most of site)
Area: 9.38 ha

Description

This cemetery provides a sizeable area of open space in a part of Leytonstone lacking in accessible wildlife sites.

Wildlife

The grassland around the graves is a mix of acid grassland, dominated by bents with abundant sheep's-sorrel, and neutral grassland comprised of rye grass and red fescue. Mature trees are scattered throughout, but are more frequent around the perimeter. These include oak, Lombardy poplar, London plane, ash, wild cherry and holly. There are large patches of bare soil, particularly in the central part of the site; ruderal vegetation flourishes in these areas.
